AH! SWEET MYSTERY OF LIFE
Secret or Hidden Truth

A Commentary by Constance Vanides

"Ah! Sweet mystery of life, at last I've found thee; Ah! At last I know the secret of it all."

The music by Victor Herbert with vibrant words by Rida Johnson Young* suddenly began to ring in my ears. As a pre-teen child I can remember sitting with Papa and Mama at our neighborhood movie theater watching the movie, "Naughty Marietta," enthralled as we listened to the classic duet team of Nelson Eddy (my mother called him, "Eddy Nelson!") and Jeanette MacDonald singing, "Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life." Emotions continuously stirred in my heart long after the movie was over. With radio and phonograph records repeating this most beloved of songs, I learned the words and would sing them over and over.

Today, suddenly released from within the deep recesses of my memory, the same words I always sang, now as a mature Christian, remind me of Bible verses!

After each line of the lyrics, I have chosen Scripture which comes to my mind:

"ALL THE LONGING SEEKING, STRIVING, WAITING, YEARNING..."

"Show me Your ways, O LORD; teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; On You I wait all the day."
(Psalm 25:4, 5)

"THE IDLE HOPES, THE JOYS AND BURNING TEARS THAT FALL!"

"Where then is my hope? As for my hope, who can see it?"
(Job 17:15)

"FOR 'TIS LOVE, AND LOVE ALONE, THE WORLD IS SEEKING;"

"He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him."
(John 14:21)

"AND IT'S LOVE, AND LOVE ALONE, I'VE WAITED FOR;"

"If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him."
(John 14:23)

"AND MY HEART HAS HEARD THE ANSWER TO ITS CALLING..."

"They will call on My name, and I will answer them. I will say, 'This is My people'; and each one will say, 'The LORD is my God.'"
(Zechariah 13:9b)

"FOR IT IS LOVE THAT RULES FOREVER MORE!"

"Praise, O servants of the LORD, Praise the name of the LORD! Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and forevermore!"
(Psalm 113:1, 2)

More than just between man and woman, the ultimate mystery of love is from God who shows His created children "what it's all about." He shows the love of Jesus as the sacrificed lamb to those who are truly seeking. Saint Augustine says it correctly, "You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You."

Sweet mystery of your life...Have you at last found Him?
