THE UNSEEN STEP BACK
One Step Down

A Commentary by Constance Vanides

"The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, and He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the LORD upholds Him with His hand." (Psalm 37:23, 24)

It was only one step down, but I didn't see it. Suddenly I was airborne, falling backwards. Although the floor was carpeted, I first bounced off the wooden arm of a chair, lacerating the back of my head, and bleeding profusely. Our hostess quickly went into the kitchen and returned with an "ice pack" of frozen green peas and many towels to wipe up and apply pressure.

While at the Hospital Emergency Room getting "stitched" with 8 staples, I had plenty of time to reflect on God's care for me. I felt His love as the saints and pastor prayed over me, trusting in His touch to bring the needed healing. I gave thanks not to have suffered a concussion or broken bones.

Just as an unseen step backwards takes one off guard and brings consequences to bear, so Satan in the spiritual world takes advantage of any backslider who willfully decides to refuse the protection of the One who delights in holding His hand.

"Now the just shall live by faith;
But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him."
"But we are not of those who draw back to perdition,
but of those who believe to the saving of the soul"
(Hebrews 10:38, 39)

The refrain from the song, "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus," (Words and Music, Helen H. Lemmel, 1922) is our response to anything, or anyone who tries to divert our attention from the trust we have in Him. Keep on going with the only One who saves: body, soul and spirit.

And... watch your step!
