CHOSEN ROCKS
God Uses Our Uniqueness

A Commentary by Constance Vanides

Tired of attempting to grow a lawn under a tree with its invasive roots brought us to re-landscape that area with rocks. We laid out a pleasant shape and soon the delivery truck arrived, sliding out its contents. Rocks of various shapes and sizes tumbled out onto the exposed roots of the tree and what was once the grass trying to be part of a lawn.

The rocks, dusty and dirty all combined into one dull colorless gray. At the very least I didn't have to water the rocks and try to make something grow. And so the front yard was laid with a nicely shaped green lawn and a contrasting area of common rocks under the towering ash tree. Nothing earth-shattering, it just looked okay.

One day as I routinely unwound the garden hose to water a few potted plants, I decided to "dust-off" the rocks with a spray of water. The washing by the water suddenly revealed each rock, as distinctly different from the other! It was as if each rock were revitalized, showing its own uniqueness. What a wonder to behold what I once thought was a boring sameness became "alive" with various colors, patterns, shapes, some smooth, others jagged, some small, others bigger, all jumbled together, leaning one against another.

What a picture of humanity! We're all thrown together in some way or other. Yet, it's only with the common denominator of water is our individualness revealed! What a picture of Jesus this is!

"Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ." (1 Peter 2:4, 5)

Jesus takes us as we are, individual drab colorless "rocks" and brings forth our beauty and uniqueness to use each one as part of His body, the church.

ACCEPTED

I love each one I've created,
filled you with My Spirit,
so you, in serving one another,
will be serving Me as well.
I take you each as you are.
I accept your willingness to follow Me
and create in you a new person,
filled with My life, My mind, My love.
To My surrendered ones
do I give all this and much more.
Go, therefore into all the world
with My message of truth.
