Romans 12:1,2
"Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect."
Have you ever wondered why your life has no purpose? Does your daily scenario look something like this? You wake up, go through the motions of preparing for the day, finally make it through, drop into bed exhausted only to start the next day doing the same thing all over again. We go year after year looking forward to what? It’s easy to understand the line in Peggy Lee’s song, “Is that all there is?”
King Solomon said it more than once, “Vanity, all is vanity.” Vanity is also described as futility; uselessness or having no real value. All is vanity, unless of course, what we do is done to serve and glorify God. When my husband, Bruce, graduated to heaven, I felt as if my purpose for living was gone. There’s this sense of hopelessness when life has no purpose. It took a lot of soul searching, but I finally realized that God is my purpose, to serve Him, whatever that looks like.
Lack of purpose has been linked to depression, physical illness, even suicide. Humans were created to have purpose. Most however, never realize that purpose because they search with the wrong emphasis, motive and goal. We Christians enjoy the unique advantage of having the power of the Holy Spirit residing within us. He is able to encourage, excite, equip and execute all that is needed when our emphasis, motive and goal aligns with God’s will.
Still, are we really willing to surrender our lives, let go of our own pre-conceived ideas, give of our time, talents and treasures and allow God to direct us in His perfect plan? We are an instant gratification society. Even when we do let go we want to see results now. If you check the life of anyone in the Bible you’ll see God doesn’t work that way. There are a multitude of lessons He would have us learn throughout the journey. God continually builds on what the Holy Spirit teaches us daily to bring to fruition His ultimate purpose.
God’s ultimate purpose is that every person He created be reconciled to Him and experience intimate fellowship with Him. He accomplishes that purpose through us, in as many different ways as there are believers.
If simply existing from one day to the next, floundering through life with no purpose has you longing for more, why not receive God’s gift of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ? Then ask God to reveal His purpose for your life. No matter how far God chooses to stretch you, don’t be afraid to take the first step to making it a reality.
An exciting adventure awaits.
